The 2015 harvest was earlier than most years. The yields and quality of red wine grapes were very good, as theongoing drought that affected most regions had little effect on the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County. Winter rains in the region were more normal. Mild winter temperature caused early bud break, but fruit set was not impacted by any severe late spring weather. As we moved into summer, the weather was perfect for ripening and harvest. Red wine grapes exhibited good acidity and ripeness. Our hillside cave aging maintained a stable aging environment for a smooth clean finish on our red wines.

Winemaker’s Notes

These grapes are sourced from the Crain-Sleeper Ranch, a heritage vineyard in the Shenandoah Valley. It is barrel aged in select French oak barrels in our hillside wine cave. The resulting wine is bright and highly aromatic with notes of dark fruit, cocoa powder and white pepper. It develops more refined flavors of red fruits and a slight smokiness across the palate. The complexity of this wine is enhanced by a silky mouth feel and lingering finish. Pair with dark chocolate or blue cheese.

Vineyard Notes
The Crane family homesteaded in Amador County in 1860, and the Crane/Sleeper ranch is one of the Shenandoah Valley’s oldest. The Old Vine Zinfandel wines are produced from 50+ year old, head pruned vines that are dry farmed. Dry farming causes deep rooting of the vines, and results in small berries and clusters with intense flavors. Grapes are harvested when they reach no higher than 25.0 BRIX and pH levels of 3.8.
Food Pairing Notes
If you are not pairing this crowd-pleasing Old Vine Zinfandel with large red meats, BBQ dishes and pasta, then it is destined for dessert: Creamy aged blue cheese, flourless decadent brownies, and bacon infused chocolates drizzled in Dulce de Leche.
